Celebrating wāhine across the motu during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™
As a result of FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, there are a bunch of amazing events and activities celebrating and championing amazing wāhine by sharing their stories. From free speaker series and celebrations, to exhibitions and installations, there’s so much happening around the motu to celebrate exceptional NZ women doing extraordinary things.
Wāhine Firsts
Wāhine Firsts is a fantastic campaign showcasing women who have achieved ground-breaking ‘firsts’. Aotearoa New Zealand has a long history of wāhine toa making their mark on the world - and here are just a few. Visit EyesOn.nz for more info.
- Barbara and Michele Cox - first parent & child to take the field together in a football international
- Lydia Ko - first World No. 1 professional golfer under 18

Girls with Goals
FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ host city, Hamilton has created the ‘Girls with Goals’ campaign, showcasing and celebrating the strengths and achievements of 11 local Waikato wāhine.
The aim of the campaign is to promote gender equality, diversity and inclusion, with the hope of inspiring others to create and smash their goals. The vibrant artwork tells the stories of 11 women, and can be seen in Garden Place until August 10, alongside the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™inspired sculpture. Find more info here.
Wellington Wāhine
Greatness can be found in many forms, not just on the field. The achievements of Wellington wāhine, big and small, are celebrated during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™
The theme of the tournament is ‘Beyond Greatness’. While the women on the field are the best in the world, the theme is a reminder that greatness can be found in many forms, beyond sport and athletic achievement. Countless Wellington wāhine achieve greatness every day, and to celebrate this, portraits of a group of local women are featured on posters, billboards, and digital screens around the city in a campaign called ‘Wellington Wāhine’.

EQUALIZE
EQUALIZEis a free-entry equity discussion series in Aotearoa New Zealand celebrating women in sport, business, culture, and society. Equalize has been popping up at Fan Festivals in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ host cities, showcasing remarkable wāhine from Aotearoa and abroad, including Dame Valerie Adams, screen producer Chelsea Winstanley, NZ Olympian, Sarah Cowley Ross, musician Georgia Lines, and rising star Arizona Leger.
