Founded over 35 years ago in New Zealand, Kathmandu has been crafting high-quality outdoor gear that enables enthusiasts to explore nature, from hiking and trail running to adventure travelling. The brand has ambitious Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals, and is committed to actively reducing its impact on the planet.

In 2022, Kathmandu introduced the world’s first biodegradable down jacket, a significant innovation in outdoor apparel. The brand is committed to responsibly sourced materials, using 100% sustainable cotton across its apparel range and ensuring all its insulation aligns with the Responsible Down Standard. Expanding its efforts, Kathmandu recently initiated Kathman-REDU, a trailblazing circularity pilot in Australia and New Zealand. This programme transforms products previously considered unsellable by cleaning, repairing, and refurbishing them for resale, further cementing Kathmandu’s commitment to circular business models.

In 2019, Kathmandu was distinguished as one of the first outdoor brands in the region to achieve B Corp certification, showcasing exceptional commitment to social and environmental responsibility. By early 2023, the brand not only retained its certification but also made significant improvements on its impact. For Kathmandu, the focus extends beyond sustainability; it encompasses a deep dedication to human rights and dignity. This commitment is clearly articulated in the 2023 KMD Brands (parent company of Kathmandu) Modern Slavery Statement, which addresses the critical issue of modern slavery, and affirms the Group’s stance on ethical practices and human welfare.

What’s refreshing about Kathmandu is that it doesn’t attempt to sell consumers a perfect picture. Instead, it is transparent, accountable and realistic about the changes that still need to be made. The company has ambitious goals but remains committed to its purpose to improve the wellbeing of the world through the outdoors.
