Womens football making history
The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ was the biggest women’s sporting event in history and, in terms of international audience, the tournament was the biggest sporting event ever held in New Zealand.
To mark this historic sporting event, Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage produced new content highlighting the history of women’s football in Aotearoa New Zealand for the NZ History and Te Ara – the Encyclopedia of New Zealand websites.
As part of the legacy project, Te Ara updated its entries relating to New Zealand’s football history and tripled the amount of content devoted to women’s football. Photos and stories of some of the stars of women’s football in Aotearoa, and achievements of New Zealand footballers abroad, were added to the site.
NZ History also produced a comprehensive timeline of women’s football, tracing the sport’s history from 1863 where the official rules of football were ratified, to 1915 when this country’s earliest known women’s matches were played, and through to 2023 where the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. The timeline highlights significant moments in women’s football and spotlights figures in the game’s history who have helped put Aotearoa on the world stage.
To celebrate FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ and the new content, Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage and NZ History posted historic player profiles throughout the tournament. Check out the content online.
